The work is based on a ready-made object taken from a record sent by NASA into space in 1977, which includes visual materials and audio files supposedly representing human civilization, in case an alien intelligence comes across it.
The video “The golden record” is composed of all images and sounds sent to space, layered and intertwined together. The work is an attempt to subvert the foundations of the archive, exploring it from a different perspective and creating new connections. The attempt itself creates endless meanings and multiple truths.
The photographs consist of images in which an intended disruption of the information / decoding failure has occurred, undermining the notion that anything can be represented by an image. The original images are also detached from their context, losing their ability to create the desired meaning. The photographs seek to provoke reflection regarding the human reliance on the sense of sight in an era where the media is becoming more and more visual.
The Video “Words from Carl Sagan” presents a personal message from Dr. Carl Sagan, the representative of the culture that created the record sent to space. Dr. Carl Sagan video archive is edited in a way that makes him confess about the failure of the project and explain the inherent inability of the image to represent reality. The result brings to mind the importance of the scientist in Western society and the positioning of science as a religion that offers absolute truth.
